Manufacturing Engineering

Introduction of manufacturing engineering

Although the beginning of the production process can be traced back to 4000 to 5000 BC, but the use of the word "production" has been common since 1567 AD. The word has Latin roots and consists of two words Manus meaning hand and Facere meaning making. In Latin, a combination of the two words ManusFactus is used to mean handmade. Collins encyclopedia uses the word "production" as: "Creating products from raw materials by using techniques, equipment, practices and manpower according to a detailed program that is cost-effective and profits from the sale of products."

However, today the direction of manufacturing industries in the world is the training of engineers who dominate various production processes with the ability to plan and manage processes in order to choose the best and most economical production method to maintain the competitiveness of companies in the global market. Due to the wide range of mechanical engineering and its division into different trends, the field of manufacturing engineering in English (Manufacturing Engineering) can be considered responsible for explaining the policy of a production unit in choosing the appropriate production method and estimating the quality of the final product.

According to the definition of Iranian Manufacturing Engineering Association, "manufacturing engineering" is a field of engineering that requires education and experience, according to which the graduate of this field of study strategies and principles of engineering in production methods such as mold design and construction, welding technology Learn, use and control machining methods, repairs and maintenance, etc. This requires the ability to know and plan in production processes so that the learner can learn about tools, methods, machines based on the experiences gained. "Research equipment and use it to improve quality and cost-effective products by improving facilities and systems."

The importance of manufacturing engineering

All parts used in home appliances, aerospace, military, service and entertainment industries from wood and plastic to metals must be produced to become a real innovation. Manufacturing engineering involves learning the science and art of making high quality, reasonably priced products. At the same time, manufacturing includes components from electrical engineering, materials engineering, and industrial engineering that give it the ability to consider different aspects of designing a product. It is safe to say that the field of mechanical engineering of manufacturing and production is the most comprehensive field among all fields of mechanics. Computers are involved in design and production.

Manufacturing and production engineering capabilities

  • A manufacturing graduate can use what he or she has learned in mathematics and engineering to solve manufacturing engineering problems in a practical way.
  •  A manufacturing graduate is able to design the required tests related to the evaluation of the manufactured product and analyze the results with high accuracy.
  •  A manufacturing engineer can design production equipment, processes, or methods that meet the customer's desired specifications of the product.
  • A manufacturing engineer can use computers and related software to design, analyze, and gather information in product design and manufacturing.
  • A construction engineer is aware of the professional ethics of an engineer and knows how engineering issues affect safety, economics, ethics, politics, society and cultural issues.

History of manufacturing engineering in Urmia University of Technology

The field of mechanical engineering of manufacturing and production was established in Urmia University of Technology in 2006 at the same time with the establishment of the university and began its work by accepting students in this field in the discontinuous bachelor's degree in machine tool orientation. In 2016, according to the needs of the market and the welcome of faculty members, the trend of mold making was replaced by the trend of machine tools in the bachelor's degree.

Due to the importance of promoting postgraduate education in advancing the goals of resistance economics and contributing to the scientific independence of society in 2019, a master's degree in manufacturing engineering was established in this university. At present, this group operates annually with the admission of 30 part-time undergraduate students and 18 postgraduate students.

The high admission statistics of students in this field in the national master's exam and the remarkable welcome of the provincial industries to the knowledge of the graduates of manufacturing and production engineering of Urmia University of Technology are among the honors of this group. At present, this university, with six faculty members with doctoral degrees, presenting numerous articles in domestic and international journals and conferences, and having the appropriate facilities, has provided a suitable platform for continuous research activities for students in this field.

Construction and production engineering facilities in Urmia University of Technology

Mechanical Engineering Department of Manufacturing and Production of Urmia University of Technology is equipped with a set of specialized workshops and laboratories that are used in educational and research programs. Such workshops can be mentioned Machine Tool Workshop, Press Mold Design Workshop, Welding Workshop and Pneumatic Laboratory.

Workshop tools

Urmia University of Technology's machine tool workshop is one of the most important workshops of the university that the students from different fields of study get acquainted. Meanwhile, students majoring in manufacturing and production get acquainted with workshop units and take various courses in this workshop, which are: universal workshop, machining ability workshop, restraint design workshop and press mold workshop.

Due to the expansion of postgraduate education in the university and the tendency towards practical projects, postgraduate and doctoral students also use the facilities of this workshop to build the molds and equipment needed to carry out their projects.

Also, relying on the created capacities and available facilities, Urmia University of Technology's machine tool workshop has the ability to carry out in-university construction projects as well as provide services to university and industrial units outside the university.

Welding workshop

Due to the available equipment, it is possible to teach welding methods on different metals to students in this workshop.

Equipment available in the workshop:

• Electric arc welding (GMAW) Argon Welding (TIG)

• Oxyacetylene Welding

• Resistance welding (RSP)

• Welding chambers
